Description

"Cars of Our Youth" is the lead single by Former Ruins (Levi Dylan Sikes), an East Coast transplant to the broad places of Indiana.

Mike Mineo of Obscure Sound remarks, "The track’s meshing of garage-rock with Springsteen-friendly comparisons like these results in a very convincing aesthetic." The Springsteenian notions are there, but turned inside-out, as the narrative voice at once preaches the liberation of the open road but laments the miles burned in pursuit of gratification. Mixed by Jon Class (Josh Garrels, Jason Barrows, THE WLDLFE), "Cars of Our Youth" features a guitar-forward arrangement that pushes and pulls like a rough-idling chassis of rust and chrome.

"Nothing satisfies us like it used to," goes the refrain, reminding the listener that this is highway summer music with a check engine light. Levi advises, "hear in this song a voice that's not necessarily my own, thought it could have been. Some mercies come to us as warnings from the edge of ruin."

With a followup single nearing completion, Former Ruins' "post-cynical folk rock" sound carves deep angles into familiar singer-songwriter territory. Having gained a reputation for translating a full band sound into hear-a-pin-drop live solo performances in the vein of Craig Finn, Julien Baker, and Big Thief, Former Ruins invites listeners into a lyrical world of doubt, desire, and wonder.
