Oscar Nominations 2020: The Complete List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—presumably still a functioning democracy, though that can’t be taken for granted these days—has tallied its votes and designated its nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards, tapping John Cho and Issa Rae to announce a slate that will certainly be far whiter and more male than they are.

As usual, the nominations are a combination of status quo maintenance, bitter disappointment and the occasional pleasant surprise. Joker leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, the obvious Best Actor nod for Joaquin Phoenix and the gut-wrenching Best Director nod for Todd Phillips. Following closely behind are Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Sam Mendes1917 and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, each with 10 nominations. All of the aforementioned directors were nominated, as was Parasite’s Bong Joon Ho—”Congratulations to those men!” Rae said after the category was announced, speaking to the ugliness of yet another all-male Best Director slate, from which Little Women writer-director Greta Gerwig was notably excluded.

Oversights abound elsewhere, as well: Jordan Peele’s Us (namely Lupita Nyong’o’s stellar lead performances), Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Josh and Benny Safdie’s Uncut Gems, Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers, Craig Brewer’s Dolemite Is my Name and Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart, among others, were completely shut out.

It’s not all bad, of course: Though Taron Egerton’s leading turn in Rocketman wasn’t nominated, Antonio Banderas took his place on the strength of his performance in Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory, which many critics worried would go unrecognized. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out makes a well-deserved appearance in the Best Original Screenplay category, while Alexandre Desplat’s “delightfulLittle Women score was also nominated. Neither The Lighthouse nor Ad Astra went overlooked, sneaking into the Cinematography and Sound Mixing categories, respectively. And Parasite, Paste’s top movie of 2019, outperformed expectations, earning an impressive six nominations—Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film (formerly known as Foreign Language Film), Film Editing and Production Design—on its way to becoming only the sixth film nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Feature Film, as well as the first South Korean nominee for the latter.

The 92nd Oscars will be presented Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, airing live on ABC. For the second year running, the awards show will have no host.
