Universal Pictures has given spy thriller 355 a Jan. 15, 2021, release date. The film’s cast includes Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing and Penelope Cruz. Simon Kinberg, who recently directed Chastain in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, is directing, and wrote the script with Teresa Rebeck. Sebastian Stan and Edgar Ramirez also star.
The cast came together in 2018, but has had a change in the lineup since. Kruger is taking over the role initially meant for Marion Cotillard, and Bingbing was accused of tax evasion last year. 355 will be her first major role since the scandal.
The film will follow a group of female spies from international agencies who must work together despite initial conflict and mistrust to stop some kind of mysterious, chaotic event that would have detrimental effects worldwide. They form a new faction code named “355,” which pays homage to the first female spy in the American Revolution.
The film is a passion project for Chastain, who stated in an Instagram video earlier this year that she came up with the concept of a female-action film while filming Dark Phoenix. Chastain is serving as a producer alongside Kelly Carmichael for Chastian’s Freckle Films and Kinberg for his Genre Films.
