New on HBO Now: All the Movies and TV Coming in September

Believe it or not, 2019 is about to enter its third and final act with the end of August, and while we can’t combat the inexorable passage of time, we sure can ignore it! A surefire means of doing so is immersing oneself in a worthwhile story, and HBO’s streaming library is gaining quite a few of those in the month to come. Here are the highlights of HBO Now’s September streaming slate, as well as a comprehensive list of its incoming titles.

HBO’s TV additions are particularly noteworthy this time around, with a pair of acclaimed shows making their season premiere and finale: The Deuce (Sept. 9) and A Black Lady Sketch Show (Sept. 6), respectively. The former series, a Golden Globe-nominated porn industry period drama co-created by The Wire collaborators David Simon and George Pelecanos, is entering its third and final season, while the latter, a groundbreaking new sketch-comedy series whose title says it all, concludes its debut set of episodes. Elsewhere on September’s small screen slate, we have: a pair of HBO Sports presentations, the season finale of NFL docuseries Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Oakland Raiders (Sept. 3) and the latest episode of LeBron James’ barbershop-set talk show The Shop: Uninterrupted (Sept. 3); two HBO Documentary Films titles commemorating (and arriving on) Sept. 11, the adult-oriented In the Shadow of the Towers: Stuyvesant High on 9/11 and children’s show What Happened on September 11; and the Season Three premiere of the Duplass Brothers’ hotel-set bottle anthology series Room 104 (Sept. 13).

September is an off month in terms of HBO film additions, to be sure, which is not to say there aren’t worthwhile titles in the mix still. The streamer’s uninspiring slate of theatrical premieres at least boasts Peter Jackson’s engrossing World War I documentary They Shall Not Grow Old (Sept. 17) and acclaimed animated sequel The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (Sept. 21), but beyond that, you’re looking at the likes of horror misfire Truth or Dare (Sept. 4), underwhelming period drama Mary Queen of Scots (Sept. 7) and … whatever the hell Welcome to Marwen (Sept. 14) was. Frankly, there’s far more to look forward to by way of older films, including Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar juggernaut of an Iraq War thriller The Hurt Locker, Paul Verhoeven’s iconic sci-fi satire Robocop, powerful 1984 Vietnam drama The Killing Fields, Disney’s Oscar-nominated Anastasia, underrated Coen Brothers comedy Hail, Caesar!, Steven Soderbergh’s late-’90s crime caper Out of Sight, rom-com classic Love Actually and 2004’s The Spongebob Squarepants Movie—all these films and more arrive on HBO Sept. 1.

We’ll leave you with the titles that are doing just that—leaving you—next month. HBO’s library is soon to be minus Ryan Reynolds-led thriller Buried, another Reynolds-driven film in super-antihero hit Deadpool 2, screwball stoner comedy Half Baked, hyper-quotable Tina Fey-scripted comedy Mean Girls, 2018’s uber-loose Rampage videogame adaptation, Soderbergh’s Oscar-winning drug war drama Traffic and slapstick-comedy classic Weekend at Bernie’s, all of which expire on Sept. 30. There are a couple of films shoving off earlier in the month, as well, so consult the complete list to ensure you’re not blindsided by any of their exits.
