New on Amazon Prime Video: All the Movies and TV Coming in August

Yup, it’s that time again. We’re here to round up the good, the bad and the ugly coming to Amazon Prime Video in August. Among the newcomers we’ve got some serious spy action, a kaiju blockbuster, a Hitchcock-esque throwback, and a neo-noir fantasy about immigration starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne—whew, what a descriptor. Let’s get started.

Tom Cruise  returns for his sixth outing as Impossible Mission Force’s top agent, Ethan Hunt, in Mission: Impossible — Fallout (Aug. 23). The enduring film franchise is the gold standard when it comes to outrageous set pieces and stellar filmmaking, and this installment is no different. See Cruise run! See Cruise jump! See a 56-year-old man do his own insane stunts! There’s a reason we called Fallout one of the best films of last year. Switching gears a bit, you can bet the star of another decades-long film series doesn’t need a body double, either. 2014’s Godzilla (Aug. 31) is the second attempt at Americanizing the radioactive behemoth, but you know, actually decent. Gareth Edwards’ reboot works best when the G-man’s onscreen (which is, frankly, not often enough), but it’s a solid effort overall and worthy of your time. A black comedy/thriller hybrid from the director of Bridesmaids, and starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively sounds like a bizarre mix, but A Simple Favor (Aug. 21) mostly pulls it off. If you’re looking for mysterious disappearances, plot twists Hitch himself might enjoy and Kendrick as a mommy vlogger, give it a shot. Other movie highlights include the excellent antihero fantasy Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Michael Cera at his most Michael Cera in Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist and the ’90s sci-fi hit The Fifth Element (all three available Aug. 31).

Amazon Prime  Original Carnival Row (Aug. 30) intrigues from the get-go, bringing Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne together for a noir-style fantasy series with a Victorian Romeo and Juliet twist. Murders abound in a world where mythical creatures flee their war-torn homeland and humans just aren’t very nice. Perhaps we’ll get some social commentary smuggled in alongside fairies and a steampunk setting? Elsewhere on Amazon’s TV slate, we have a Jay-Z-executive-produced, five-part docuseries about fellow rapper Meek Mill’s incarceration in 2017. Free Meek (Aug. 9) focuses on the musician’s early release and his rise to prison reform activism in the months that followed. It’s gripping stuff. Later in the month, Amazon Prime’s first stand-up comedy special arrives with Jim Gaffigan’s Quality Time (Aug. 16). The “clean comedy” comic drops the shock value of others in the field, so this might be one for the whole family. Well, maybe just the funny relatives.
