Hear Weyes Blood Perform a Wonderfully Sedating Live Session on This Day in 2015

California singer/songwriter Natalie Mering (a.k.a. Weyes Blood) makes music that exists on a separate metaphysical plane from the rest of us. There’s a familiar safety, wispy breeziness and rich elegance in her soprano vocals—qualities often found in pop’s greatest singers. Although there’s a poignancy in her retro folk-pop, there’s a sense of nurture in her soothing voice, which pairs perfectly with delicately plucked acoustic guitar, grand piano and warbling synths.

Mering’s latest album as Weyes Blood, this year’s Titanic Rising, landed atop Paste’s list of Best Albums of 2019 (So Far). Paste contributor Ben Salmon praised the album, highlighting “Mering’s gift for haunting melody and the folk form hovering slightly below the surface.”

On this day in 2015, Mering visited San Francisco’s Studio Paradiso to record a wonderfully sedating session for Daytrotter. Mering performed three cuts from Weyes Blood’s second album, 2014’s The Innocents, as well as “Just Give,” which was later retitled “Diary” and released on her third album, 2016’s Front Row Seat to Earth.
