We’ve been hearing about the Netflix-based prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 puppet-fest, The Dark Crystal, for a couple years now. But it looks like viewers can finally expect to return to the trippy world of Thra this summer.
confirmed Tuesday that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will launch Aug. 30, and gave us an even closer look at the live-action characters and sets in a few promo stills. The elfin Gelflings return, as do the (still quite creepy) crusty vulture-like Skeksis.
Also included was a more in-depth synopsis of the 10-episode production:
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.
Based on The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s groundbreaking 1982 feature film, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realized using classic puppetry with cutting edge visual effects. The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.
Anya Taylor-Joy, Nathalie Emmanuel and recent Elton John impersonator Taron Egerton play the lead Gelflings, Brea, Deet and Rian, respectively. A veritable murderers’ row of actors fleshes out the rest of the cast, including Helena Bonham Carter, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, Mark Hamill, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg, Keegan-Michael Key, Caitriona Balfe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Ralph Ineson and Jason Isaacs, among others.
The series is directed by French director Louis Leterrier, whose previous works include the Jason Statham action vehicles The Transporter and The Transporter 2.
