Pixies' Doolittle Turns 30 and Receives Platinum Certification

It turns out an album about prostitution, obscure biblical stories and sliced-up eyeballs can go platinum, too. Pixies’ seminal sophomore record Doolittle came out 30 years ago today in 1989, and they’re celebrating the anniversary with an official Platinum certification recognizing one million units sold.

Doolittle only gets more prescient and exhilarating with age, balancing bona fide alt-rock hits like “Here Comes Your Man” and “Debaser” with more left-field cuts like “Tame,” “Crackity Jones” and “Silver.” The album pushed forward and crystallized the Pixies sound, and ushered in a wave of disciples like Nirvana and Radiohead who would define the sound of rock music in the 1990s.

To mark the milestone, Boston record store chain Newbury Comics is releasing a limited-edition exclusive vinyl pressing of Doolittle on July 12. The record comes with a choice of three different vinyl art styles—pinwheel, splatter and swirl—chosen by Newbury Comics staff. Only 1,000 copies of each type will be sold.

Pixies’ last album was 2016’s Head Carrier, their first with new bassist Paz Lenchantin. They also released a live album called Live from The Fallout Shelter last year. The current lineup of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, David Lovering and Lenchantin has finished recording a new album that’s due out later this year. Pixies are also embarking on a world headlining tour that kicks off in the U.K. in September.

You can stream Doolittle here and preorder the limited-edition Newbury Comics pressings of the album here. Check out Pixies’ full list of dates below.
