Lucas Hedges, Sterling K. Brown to Star in Musical from Trey Edward Shults

Lucas Hedges and Sterling K. Brown are set to star in Waves, a dramatic musical from director Trey Edward Shults, according to Variety.

The musical will follow two young couples working through the trials of growing up and falling in love. Additionally, Shults will pen the film, and Waves will be his third collaboration with A24, following last year’s atypical horror pic It Comes At Night (2017) and 2015’s Krisha.

Hedges was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 2016’s Manchester by the Sea, but his filmography is loaded with criticallyacclaimed films—don’t groan too much when you remember that he’s only 21—including Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel, as well as Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Hedges will next appear in Joel Edgerton’s conversion therapy drama Boy Erased (the release of which was just this week pushed back to Nov. 2).

Starring opposite Hedges is Emmy winner Brown, best known for his work on NBC’s much-loved This Is Us, as well as in Black Panther and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Brown was the first-ever African-American actor to win a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama for his role in This Is Us.

Featuring a combination of some contemporary songs and an original score by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Waves will be almost entirely synchronized to music. The duo previously won an Oscar for their score for The Social Network (2010).

Filming is slated to begin next month in Florida. Check back for further updates on Waves as production continues and see below for the correct reaction to what you’ve just read.
