Angel Olsen Announces New Rarities Collection Phases, Releases Unheard Tracks

Angel Olsen has become a ‘50s-era classic-rock icon, and it’s not because of My Woman’s acclaim.

It’s releasing a collection of B-sides and rarities called Phases on Nov. 10 via Jagjaguwar after recently exiting My Woman’s honeymoon phase. It’s explaining songs as “’50s and relaxed” (as per a Song Exploder interview) and unwittingly echoing Hank Williams in the opening of a song. It’s also because Olsen is genre-spanning and brand-avoiding, the mega star and the girl strumming and crooning behind closed doors for songs like “Special” and “Fly on Your Wall,” which came out today. (Olsen originally released the latter track as part of Our First 100 Days.)

“Shut Up Kiss Me” lifted Olsen from a white-fire funeral pyre and onto the dance floor, but the Olsen that we know and love lives in the quieter moments. On “Special,” an unreleased song from the My Woman sessions, Olsen laments: “Too many like us run out of the steeple / guess you could say I’ve lost some faith in people.” Between “Special” and “Fly on Your Wall,” she touches on what it is to be noticed, and what it is to be trapped. Phases will be a deep cut for fans—and a chance for everyone to deeply reflect on bad relationships, emotional mistakes, and the sweet, bitter darkness life has to offer.
