Daily Dose: Mattiel, “Whites of Their Eyes”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

In fewer than three minutes, Atlanta-based newcomer Mattiel Brown channels some of the best names in modern blues-rock. With its Big Muff-flavored tone, her lead single “Whites of Their Eyes” has the punch of Thickfreakness-era Black Keys, the tension of The White Stripe’s tour supporting Icky Thump and the vocal wiles of Sally Ford & The Sound Outside circa 2013’s Untamed Beast.

Before announcing her self-titled debut, due out Sept. 22 via Burger Records, Mattiel was a graphic designer, illustrator and set builder. Although the physical process of between building sets and building songs may differ, Mattiel seems to conjure a similar craftsmanship in her second creative pursuit—a knack for building something out of nothing. And as for her vocals, she used her car ride commutes to work on her voice, which makes “Whites of Their Eyes” an even better song to blast and holler along with at the top of your lungs.

Check out “Whites of Their Eyes” below and stay tuned for Mattiel’s eponymous debut album due out Sept. 22 via Burger Records.
