If anyone was curious whether the new Flaming Lips track “There Should Be Unicorns” was meant to be a metaphorical song about hope, imagination and escape or a literal ode to magical horses with horns, wonder no more. Wayne Coyne has partially answered this question on the current tour behind Oczy Mlody, mounting a literal (fake) unicorn as the track’s synthetic rumbles and drum machines patter away. The spectacle offers a nice parallel to previous FL shows that invited attendees onstage to dress in martian garb circa Wayne’s directorial debut, Christmas on Mars, making each concert a visual exhibition of the band’s psychedelic headspace. Paste photographer Amy Harris recently caught the confetti cyclone antics of the group when they played Alcatraz in Milan, Italy, which also included a rendition of their “Space Oddity” cover. The Flaming Lips are currently on tour throughout the United States until May.
