Live Photos: American Football & Joan of Arc Bring Back the Feels in NYC

For late ‘90s cerebral emo fans, American Football was the one that got away. Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes and Steve Lamos apparated into 1998 with a magnetic EP (all three of their records are called American Football) and followed up the next year with a debut LP before abruptly dissolving into other bands. A lingering trail of buzz and fandom followed in the impact of those albums—they offered a dense mandala of winding arpeggios and vulnerable lyrics articulated by Kinsella’s crystalline voice. The group reunited to tour in 2014 for the 15-year anniversary of their long play before returning last October with a new album, just as shimmering and introspective as their most lauded material.

Paste photographer Drew Reynolds caught the group at their sold-out New York show at Terminal 5 alongside math rock openers Joan of Arc—who Kinsella used to play drums in. American Football is currently playing select dates in the United States and Europe, while Joan of Arc is touring the US through early March.
